La basilique s\u2019est pourtant impos\u00e9e comme une r\u00e9f\u00e9rence en mati\u00e8re d\u2019architecture religieuse au moins jusque dans les ann\u00e9es 1950, et est devenue un \u00e9difice parisien incontournable voire iconique pour les nombreux visiteurs de la capitale. Ce projet de protection a d\u2019abord fait l\u2019objet d\u2019un examen en commission r\u00e9gionale de l\u2019architecture et du patrimoine d\u2019\u00cele-de-France le 13 octobre 2020, en vue d\u2019une inscription au titre des monuments historiques.
