La terre crue, uniform\u00e9ment r\u00e9partie sur tout le territoire du Parc(sur les d\u00e9partements de la Manche et du Calvados), a naturellement permis de d\u00e9velopper une pratique constructive originale mettant \u00e0 profit une technique sp\u00e9cifique : la bauge, m\u00e9lange de terre, d&rsquo;eau et de fibres, qui permet le montage, sans qu&rsquo;il soit besoin de coffrage, de murs massifs porteurs. Localement d\u00e9sign\u00e9e sous les appellations de \u00abmur de terre\u00bb, \u00abm\u00e2sse\u00bb, \u00abm\u00e2ss\u00e9\u00bb, \u00abmur d&rsquo;argile\u00bb&#8230; Cette technique a offert, au moins d\u00e8s le 16e si\u00e8cle et jusqu&rsquo;au premier quart du 20e si\u00e8cle, une r\u00e9ponse \u00e0 l&rsquo;ensemble des besoins du b\u00e2ti. Depuis plus de 15 ans, le Parc naturel r\u00e9gional des Marais du Cotentin et du Bessin se pr\u00e9occupe du devenir et de la reconnaissance du patrimoine architectural en bauge de son territoire. Fort de cette exp\u00e9rience, il a souhait\u00e9 approfondir les connaissances scientifiques sur cette architecture. C&rsquo;est pourquoi, une collaboration avec la Direction de l&rsquo;Inventaire g\u00e9n\u00e9ral du Patrimoine culturel de la R\u00e9gion Basse- Normandie a \u00e9t\u00e9 mise en place. Engag\u00e9 conjointement par les deux services en 2001, un inventaire de ce patrimoine a permis d&rsquo;identifier 3887 \u00e9difices et d&rsquo;en \u00e9tudier plus de 700.
