En \u00e9troite collaboration avec l\u2019Universit\u00e9 technologique de Lulea en Su\u00e8de, le chercheur et doctorant de l\u2019Empa Christian Eyholzer a d\u00e9velopp\u00e9 des colles, des hydrogels et des polym\u00e8res biod\u00e9gradables renforc\u00e9s \u00e0 l\u2019aide de cette nouvelle poudre de nanocellulose. Une fois sa th\u00e8se de doctorat achev\u00e9e, Eyholzer a quitt\u00e9 l\u2019Empa et il travaille actuellement chez Sika comme chef de projet dans le d\u00e9partement de d\u00e9veloppement de cette entreprise.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>\u000bLa science et l\u2019industrie s\u2019int\u00e9ressent depuis quelque temps d\u00e9j\u00e0 au nouveau biomat\u00e9riau qu\u2019est la nanocellulose. Fabriqu\u00e9e \u00e0 partir de cellulose, elle est form\u00e9e de nanofibres longues de plusieurs microm\u00e8tres et d\u2019un diam\u00e8tre de quelques nanom\u00e8tres seulement. Sous cette forme, elle ouvre un vaste de champ d\u2019applications dans la fabrication de mat\u00e9riaux associant un faible poids \u00e0 une stabilit\u00e9 m\u00e9canique \u00e9lev\u00e9e. En effet, ces nanofibres de cellulose pr\u00e9sentent une surface sp\u00e9cifique extr\u00eamement \u00e9lev\u00e9e qui leur permet de r\u00e9agir avec l\u2019eau mais aussi avec des substances organiques ou inorganiques ainsi qu\u2019avec des polym\u00e8res. C\u2019est, de plus, une mati\u00e8re premi\u00e8re obtenues par des voies biologiques, enti\u00e8rement biod\u00e9gradable.\u000b\u000bJusqu\u2019\u00e0 maintenant, la nanocellulose isol\u00e9e \u00e0 partir de la cellulose se pr\u00e9sentait sous forme d\u2019une suspension aqueuse dont le s\u00e9chage provoquait un agglutinement des nanofibres et la perte de leurs excellentes propri\u00e9t\u00e9s m\u00e9caniques. Pour \u00e9viter cela, des scientifiques du Laboratoire pour l&rsquo;essai des mat\u00e9riaux de construction suisse (l\u2019Empa) ont d\u00e9velopp\u00e9 un proc\u00e9d\u00e9 permettant de s\u00e9cher cette nanocellulose sans qu\u2019elle s\u2019agglutine. Ce proc\u00e9d\u00e9 consiste \u00e0 modifier chimiquement la nanocellulose \u00e0 l\u2019aide d\u2019un proc\u00e9d\u00e9 facilement transposable \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9chelle industrielle et absolument inoffensif. Le r\u00e9sultat est excellent : apr\u00e8s redispersion dans l\u2019eau, la poudre de nanocellulose modifi\u00e9e pr\u00e9sente les m\u00eames propri\u00e9t\u00e9s que la nanocellulose non modifi\u00e9e et non s\u00e9ch\u00e9e. Cette poudre de nanocellulose est ainsi une alternative int\u00e9ressante aux suspensions de nanocellulose conventionnelles compos\u00e9es de plus de 90 pour-cent d\u2019eau.
