Ce proc\u00e9d\u00e9 permet de transformer du bois non durable, ou fragile, en modifiant sa structure mol\u00e9culaire, afin de le rendre imputrescible et durable. La cellule du bois est chauff\u00e9e \u00e0 haute temp\u00e9rature, et celui-ci, normalement hydrophile (spongieux), devient hydrophobe (l&rsquo;eau n&rsquo;y p\u00e9n\u00e8tre plus). Les cycles de transformation du mat\u00e9riau se font sans adjonction de produits chimiques. De plus, les rejets de gaz par les bois sont r\u00e9utilis\u00e9s pour la combustion, ce qui induit une \u00e9conomie d&rsquo;\u00e9nergie non n\u00e9gligeable. Enfin, son faible taux d&rsquo;humidit\u00e9 (entre 4 et 7%) le rend parfaitement stable, et le met \u00e0 l&rsquo;abri des attaques de champignons. Les mati\u00e8res nutritives \u00e9tant d\u00e9truites (plus de s\u00e8ve, tanin, etc.), il n&rsquo;est plus attaqu\u00e9 par les insectes. Nos anc\u00eatres, d\u00e9j\u00e0, br\u00fblaient le bois de fa\u00e7on superficielle avant de le mettre en terre. Ce proc\u00e9d\u00e9 permet d&#8217;employer des bois largement r\u00e9pandus en France.
