Son caract\u00e8re exceptionnel et unique tient au fait qu\u2019elle est le plus ancien document sur parchemin repr\u00e9sentant le monde. Elle est pr\u00e9cieusement conserv\u00e9e dans les r\u00e9serves, \u00e0 l\u2019abri de la lumi\u00e8re, de l\u2019humidit\u00e9 et de la poussi\u00e8re. La Mappa Mundi, dont le nom en latin donnera plus tard le terme fran\u00e7ais de \u00ab mappemonde \u00bb, est \u00e0 Albi ce que la Joconde est au Louvre : une oeuvre unique et pr\u00e9cieuse.\u00a0 Incluse dans l\u2019un des manuscrits du VIIIe si\u00e8cle provenant de la biblioth\u00e8que du chapitre cath\u00e9dral de Sainte-C\u00e9cile, cette carte du monde est le plus ancien document conserv\u00e9 d\u2019une repr\u00e9sentation du monde habit\u00e9 \u00e0 l\u2019exception de deux tablettes (l\u2019une m\u00e9sopotamienne (vers &#8211; 2600), et l\u2019autre babylonienne (- 600). Son origine reste vague. Il est possible qu\u2019elle ait \u00e9t\u00e9 r\u00e9alis\u00e9e \u00e0 Albi, sinon en Septimanie correspondant \u00e0 la r\u00e9gion large du Sud de la Gaule voire en Espagne.
