Toutefois, de nouveaux r\u00e9sultats obtenus par des chercheurs du Cirad contredisent ces pr\u00e9dictions optimistes. Publi\u00e9s dans la revue Journal of Ecology, ils r\u00e9v\u00e8lent que les modifications climatiques, en favorisant des esp\u00e8ces d&rsquo;arbres plus petites, pourraient au contraire alt\u00e9rer le r\u00f4le de puits de carbone jou\u00e9 par les \u00e9cosyst\u00e8mes forestiers tropicaux.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00c0 l\u2019heure actuelle, les for\u00eats tropicales constituent des puits de carbone particuli\u00e8rement efficaces. On consid\u00e8re qu\u2019elles stockent pr\u00e8s de 40 % du carbone terrestre (en incluant \u00e0 la fois biomasse v\u00e9g\u00e9tale et sol). Ghislain Vieilledent, chercheur au Cirad, et ses collaborateurs ont choisi d\u2019\u00e9valuer les effets du changement climatique sur les capacit\u00e9s de stockage des for\u00eats tropicales de Madagascar via l\u2019emploi de \u00ab mod\u00e8les d\u2019enveloppe bioclimatique \u00bb. Leurs pr\u00e9dictions indiquent que la diminution de la dur\u00e9e de la saison de v\u00e9g\u00e9tation, l\u2019augmentation de la temp\u00e9rature moyenne annuelle (+3,7 \u00b0C) et la diminution des pr\u00e9cipitations annuelles (-107 mm) pourraient conduire \u00e0 une diminution de 17 % (certaines pr\u00e9dictions allant jusqu\u2019\u00e0 24 %) du stock de carbone forestier d\u2019ici \u00e0 2080. Ces modifications climatiques favoriseraient en effet les arbres et les esp\u00e8ces de plus petite taille, dont la capacit\u00e9 de stockage est moindre. L\u2019\u00e9tude identifie \u00e9galement des points de basculement : au-dessus d\u2019une temp\u00e9rature moyenne annuelle de 21 \u00b0C et en-dessous de 1 100 mm de pr\u00e9cipitations par an, le stock de carbone des for\u00eats tropicales humides pourrait s\u2019effondrer. Plus grave : ces r\u00e9sultats r\u00e9v\u00e8lent aussi que les for\u00eats pourraient devenir \u00e9mettrices de CO2, et contribuer ainsi \u00e0 l\u2019acc\u00e9l\u00e9ration du changement climatique. On assisterait alors \u00e0 un emballement du ph\u00e9nom\u00e8ne.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u00ab Dans un monde toujours plus chaud et plus sec, il y a un risque que les for\u00eats tropicales humides que nous connaissons aujourd\u2019hui finissent par ressembler davantage \u00e0 des savanes arbor\u00e9es qu\u2019\u00e0 des for\u00eats imp\u00e9n\u00e9trables , conclut Ghislain Vieilledent.
