Cet ouvrage est le fruit du programme de recherche \u00ab\u00a0Arbre, for\u00eat et bois, Politiques et communications XVIe-XXIe si\u00e8cle\u00a0\u00bb, initi\u00e9 en 2009 par le GHFF et l&rsquo;Universit\u00e9 catholique de Louvain (UCL). Constat \u00e0 l&rsquo;origine de ce programme\u00a0: les fins auxquelles a \u00e9t\u00e9 utilis\u00e9e l&rsquo;image de l&rsquo;arbre et de la for\u00eat au cours des si\u00e8cles ont forg\u00e9 les repr\u00e9sentations sociales de ces derniers. Paradoxe actuel\u00a0: si, aujourd&rsquo;hui, arbres et for\u00eats b\u00e9n\u00e9ficient d&rsquo;une image globalement positive, celle-ci ne refl\u00e8te pas la situation \u00e9conomique et sociale des propri\u00e9taires, gestionnaires et autres partenaires de la fili\u00e8re for\u00eat-bois qui, parfois consid\u00e9r\u00e9s comme les d\u00e9tenteurs symboliques d&rsquo;un bien commun, constatent que leurs actes de renouvellement et d&rsquo;exploitation de leur for\u00eat font de plus en plus souvent l&rsquo;objet de contestations.
